What’s the most important piece of paper in your job search? If you said it’s your resume or your cover letter, you’d be wrong. It’s your job application.

Over 90% of companies run some type of background check on job applicants today. To get the detailed information that is required to run a thorough check, most companies require applicants to fill out a specially-designed application form.

Over 80% of companies say that discrepancies on a job application can take a candidate out of the running, yet half of the background checks run in 2005 found inaccuracies in the information provided by applicants.

As you can see, how you fill out that job application is directly tied to whether or not you get hired.

There are four golden rules to follow when filling out a job application. Some of them are obvious and all of them are important. If you follow these rules, you will start the pre-employment screening process far ahead of your competitors.

Tell the Truth:

As amazing as it sounds, over half of all applicants lie on their applications. Don’t be one of them. Nothing will take you out of consideration faster than fabricating information. Because so many companies check backgrounds today, the chances are very good that lies will be discovered and you will not get the job.

Be Neat:

Since companies use the information on your job application to check your background, make sure people can read it. If you can type your application, do it. If not, print clearly. Your mother might be able to read your handwriting, but she is not the one who will be checking your background.

Be Complete:

It is always better to give too much information, rather than too little. You never know what a company will want to verify. Here are some general rules:

1. If there is space on the application, list every diploma and degree you have received. Some companies will only verify your highest degree, while others will want to verify everything.

2. Fill in as many employment boxes as you can. Work study, internships, and volunteer jobs all provided you with experience. List them if you have room.

3. Always provide up-to-date phone numbers and addresses for your previous employers.

Be Prepared:

Most companies will not tell you what information they plan to check. Some will only run a criminal check, while others will verify every piece of information on your job application. You need to be prepared for anything they choose to do.

You also need to be prepared for anything a hiring company might hear about you. Even though previous employers may be liable for saying bad things about you, it happens every day. If there is bad news out there, it is far better for you to tell the hiring company than to have them find it out on their own.

Before you send out that first resume, or respond to that first newspaper ad, take the time to prepare the detailed information that needs to go on your job application.

Remember, while a great-looking resume will get you in the door and solid interviewing skills will help you make the final cut, if you don’t pass the background check, you won’t get the job.

Virtual Jobs. The future is here. With more companies downsizing, the need for a virtual employee or contractor, is increasing daily. Have you ever called a company and the customer service agent was in another country? That's because big corporations, like major toy stores, may get 100,000 incoming calls or more a day! To staff enough people taking those calls, would require a bigger call center building, agents, electricity, phones, computers, more fuel used for travel to and from the job site.
   Therefore, the need is apparent. But where do you find a good job, working at home? Search the internet for "work at home" and over 1.8 billion results are returned. Wow! That's a lot to sift through. That's exactly what I did. Day after day, searching for "work at home virtual jobs". I searched for months, till I found them. I applied, my son applied, and then my girlfriend applied. Took a bit more time than a regular out in the world application. But we were all hired. Great companies that hired work at home agents. We take inbound customer service calls for really big companies. Paid by the minute, we average $8-$18 per hour, depending on peak call times.
   Working at home is very rewarding from my side of the fence. I make my own schedule. I take off when I need, and I don't have to ask anybody. I will say, it does take a lot of discipline. So easy to take too much time off, you really have to treat it like any other job. Except for the drive to work. We have to be on time for the schedule we make. But the pro's far out weigh the con's.

The Only Way To Resign

Once you've accepted the offer with your new employer and set the start date, obviously the next step is to let your current employer know you'll be leaving. Write a brief letter of resignation (the operative word there is "brief").

If you feel a need out of loyalty or guilt to write anything more than a few short sentences, curb it. The only information your letter needs to contain are the following two (possibly three) items:

-- that you are leaving your current company
-- what your last date of employment will be, and
-- if you feel comfortable adding a sentence or two about how you enjoyed working for your current company, and you appreciate the opportunity to have been a part of the organization, tack that on

It should NOT include:

-- why you are leaving
-- where you are going
-- what you will be doing in your new position
-- how much you will be making when you get there
-- how bad you feel about leaving (or conversely, how glad you are to be going!)

Make an appointment with your boss and hand deliver the letter. Tell him verbally the same words that your letter says, because the face-to-face is courteous and professional, while the letter is a formality for record of your employment. And be prepared for one of three things to happen.

Either your boss will professionally acknowledge your resignation, say how sorry he is to have you go, and shake your hand, or he will become very silent - just before he asks you what it would take to keep you. Or quite possibly, he'll do the former, and you'll be asked to another meeting later so that he can find out what it will take to keep you.

If your company is truly professional, you'll resign, shake hands, and that will be that. But it doesn't always go down that way, which takes us into the second way to resign, which actually is in danger of not being a resignation at all. It only starts out that way.

The first thing you need to know is that a counter offer is NOT - IS NOT - a sincere and genuine statement of their desire to keep you around for as long as you might decide to stay should you change your mind and accept their counter offer.

What you've just done by resigning is put the company at a disadvantage. You are creating an opening within the company, and you've left your company at a loss. By resigning, you've basically said, "I'm not interested in this company any more." You've caused your loyalty to be questioned. You are in control, and they are not.

If your boss invites you in for a concerned chat, you're better off sounding like a broken record - repeating your "thank you" and "my last day is..." than you are involving yourself in what appears to be a caring conversation about your ensuing future.

It doesn't matter what you want or what you ask for, because they'll give it to you - in one form or another - or possibly offer you something tasty before you even speak up. After they've lulled and flattered you into submission, and as you walk out the door smiling, they're calling the newspaper or a recruiter and ordering up a confidential replacement.

In 25 years of recruiting - my firm, and working with other firms - I have never, ever, ever seen an accepted counter offer work in favor of the individual.

Don't, for a minute, think I am being overly dramatic. A counter offer is a complete and 100% appeal to your ego and an attempt to push your guilt button. It's unprofessional of your company to attempt it, and it's unprofessional (and ill conceived) of you to take it.

It might be a month, or six months, but eventually, your next departure from the company will be on their terms.

BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO
When you leave a company, it is like breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend. Regardless of how you do it, there will still be emotions. The longer the relationship, the deeper the feelings. Keep this in mind during the separation. People express their emotions in different ways so be prepared to respond with compassion.

IT'S A SMALL WORLD
I've learned first hand not to burn bridges. In fact, I was hired by my former boss within two years of leaving the company. He had moved onto a bigger job with another company and thought of me when a position came open in his department. Since we already had a great relationship, the interview process was both short and painless. Also, the job was a significant step up for me both professionally and financially.

TO DO OR NOT TO DO?
Here are a few do's and don'ts that may help make the transition a little easier for everyone.

DO write and give a simple resignation letter to your immediate boss and, perhaps, your Human Resources Director, if appropriate. By putting a few key items in writing, it memorializes your intention to leave the company. It also gives you a chance to pre-play the discussion with your boss. The letter should include the following: your last day on the job, open items that you need to complete prior to leaving, and any work that you will need to pass off to someone else.

DON'T say anything negative about the company or anyone working for the company. While this is a good policy to employ at all times, it is even more critical when you are leaving. Disgruntled employees may seek you out during this time to air their negative feelings about the company or people working for the company. Resist the temptation to entertain these conversations. It is likely that your comments will be shared with others.

DO give as much advance notice as possible to allow for a smooth transition. Typically, this is two to four weeks. Use your best judgment to decide how long you will need to give keeping in mind what's best for the company. Be aware that is also possible that the company will ask you to leave immediately, especially if you're going to work for a competitor. This is nothing personal and should not be considered an insult.

DO work hard until you leave. It's perfectly natural to get "short-timer's disease" as you have already mentally moved onto the new position. Whether discussing movies, books, or relationships; people generally remember the beginning and end more than the middle.

DON'T take anything that is not yours. Whether it's a stapler, a book that belongs to the company, copy paper, or paper clips; leave them behind. While you're at it, tidy up a bit.

DO make yourself available for your replacement. If the company hires your replacement before you leave, offer to train them. Even after you have departed, it's a good idea to leave a phone number where you can be reach with times that it is acceptable to call.

DON'T abuse e-mail, the telephone, or the internet during your last days. Be sure to keep your communication as professional as you have during your tenure.

There's no reason that you still can't be friends when it's over. If you are careful to maintain a good reputation with the company, their suppliers, their customers, and employees; it will pay off considerably. It may not happen right away, but your paths will cross again.

He/she seemed excited about extending an offer. And then, with offer in hand, it was thrilling to give your notice (or tell your friends you’re finally employed after a long stint of unemployment!). All seemed right with the world.

You’ve now been on board a few days… a week… perhaps even a month. Suddenly you’re not so sure you’ve made the right decision. The job that seemed like a dream is starting to feel like a nightmare. Perhaps the position isn’t what you thought it would be; it’s either too narrow, too broad, not challenging enough, or more of a stretch than you imagined. Maybe the company isn’t measuring up. Or, perhaps your boss isn’t the caring, supportive mentor you thought he/she would be.

In a state of confusion, you wonder what you should do. Stick it out? For how long? Leave? Then what? The decision to stay or leave a new job is a personal one, with no right or wrong answer, as everyone’s situation is unique. And most people, at one time or another, have been faced with this dilemma. To help you think through your next move and determine what’s right for you, here are some questions you may want to ask yourself:

Is it just the newness of the job? Changing jobs can be an unsettling experience. In your previous job, you knew your way around - you knew what was expected of you; you knew your job; you knew the players; you felt like you belonged. In a new job, however, it takes time to learn the ropes and feel like you’re truly adding value. Sometimes it’s best to give yourself time to get over the “newness” and then decide if the job is right for you.

Can you live with your boss? Hiring managers sometimes put their best foot forward in an interview, then do an about-face when a new employee arrives. Even though your boss isn’t the supportive manager you thought he/she would be, can you live with the change? If so, it may be worth staying. Carefully evaluating your financial situation prior to jumping ship will help alleviate regrets later on. Consider also the momentum you had in your job search prior to starting your job. Can it be easily resurrected so your time of unemployment is minimized?

The decision to stay or leave an intolerable new job is a tough one. How long to stay is also a dilemma. Many have left after two weeks, never to look back. Others have stayed, only to regret staying too long. And still others have stayed and managed to make everything work out. Only you can decide what’s best for you and your situation.

If you answer the above questions honestly, you will surely make the right decision for you. Pay attention to how you’re feeling and what the job is doing to your health and self-esteem. Recognize that the longer you stay, the greater the requirement to add the job to your resume. Know that it’s always an option to stay and look for employment on the side. Cover letter writing style must be direct, to the point, and able to grab the attention of the reader quickly, with a goal of making the reader want to read the attached resume.

'Excellence' Program Assists People With Disabilities

People with disabilities remain an untapped resource in the nation's work force, facing an unemployment rate of 70 percent.

NISH, a nonprofit organization that helps secure federal contracts for agencies that employ people with disabilities through the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program, is working to change the status quo. The organization has introduced a new program whereby agencies designated as "Centers of Excellence" serve as mentors to other agencies to help them improve the quality of the service and products they provide to the federal government.

The Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program is the largest single source of jobs in the U.S. for people with disabilities. Often referred to as the JWOD program, it provides employment opportunities for more than 45,000 people who are blind or have other severe disabilities.

Through the JWOD program, NISH works with a network of more than 600 nonprofit agencies that employ and train people with disabilities.

The program stems from the Wagner-O'Day Act, passed in 1938, which provided employment opportunities for the blind by allowing them to manufacture mops and brooms to sell to the federal government. In 1971, Congress amended the act to include people with severe disabilities and to allow the agencies to provide services as well as products.

According to a recent Harris Interactive survey, two out of three people with disabilities who are not working want to work, but the lack of opportunities and accessibility issues prevent them from finding employment.

We are of the idea that tourism is very strategic for the development of any state. We believe its diffusion and awareness must be present in both the formal and non formal education, which said we will approach this issue of legal education at the top level and geared to the students of Tourism.

The factors that prompted changes in the list of Best Careers have implications for all career seekers. Here is a glance at some trends and a word on how to search for your best career:

Even college grads might want to consider blue-collar careers. Last year, because U.S. News readers tend to be college educated, we included only careers that typically require at least a bachelor's degree. This year we've added four careers that don't. Why? More and more students are graduating from college at the same time that employers are offshoring more professional jobs. So, many holders of a bachelor's degree are having trouble finding jobs that require college-graduate skills. Meanwhile, society has been telling high school students that college is the way, so there's an accelerating shortage of skilled people in jobs that don't require college. (Why else do you think you have to pay $100 an hour for a plumber?)

The four noncollege careers we added would be rewarding even to many college graduates, especially because college grads are likely to stand out against the competition. Those added careers are: biomedical equipment technician, firefighter, hairstylist/cosmetologist, and locksmith/security system technician. Other skilled blue-collar careers that scored well on our selection criteria: machinist (manufacturers report a shortage), nuclear plant technician (few people are entering the field, yet plans are on the books for building more plants), and electrician/electronics tech (above-average pay, and it's easier on the body than many other blue-collar careers). The takeaway: Many college graduates should consider skilled-trade careers.

Government is becoming an employer of choice. Corporations, fueled by pressures to compete globally, continue to get ever leaner. Nonprofits are increasingly strapped because of donor fatigue and continued scandals. Government, beneficiary of increased tax revenues in good times and often able to raise taxes in bad times, has the luxury of continually paying employees well, whether it's an economically sound practice or not. As the last bastion of job security, government offers good pay, ample sick days, holidays, vacation days, health insurance, and retirement benefits. With signs pointing to the Democrats taking control of the White House plus both houses of Congress, government hiring of nonmilitary personnel can be expected to increase. So, we have added government manager to the list of Best Careers.

Consider a career's resistance to offshoring. Well-publicized failures of offshoring may have led the public to think that companies are reducing its use. In fact, companies are quietly increasing offshoring efforts, even jobs previously considered to be better left in the United States: innovation and marketing research, for example. So, we have added offshore resistance to the criteria we used in selecting the Best Careers. Offshore resistance was one of the factors that led to adding these careers to this year's list: curriculum/training specialist, genetic counselor, ghostwriter, investment banker, mediator, and usability/user experience specialist.

Status may be the enemy of contentment. It seems the pursuit of status is greater than ever. People are flocking in greater numbers to such careers as medical research, medicine, and architecture. Yet recent surveys and other indicators of job satisfaction in those professions paint a less-than-rosy picture. So, we've added those three careers to our list of Most Overrated Careers, which includes other high-status but often unrewarding careers such as attorney and chef.

A list of careers is a great place to start. We've tried to identify careers likely to be enjoyable to many people and to write short profiles that will give you a real feel for what each career is like. With high energy costs bearing down on individuals and companies alike, green industries offer viable solutions to our world's energy fix, and plenty of jobs. Experts point to a host of in-demand green jobs, a handful of which are below, noting that as the industries and technologies constantly evolve, so too will these jobs.

Wind-Energy Developer
The U.S. wind-energy market is very competitive, drawing new players and offering growth opportunities in all sectors of the industry, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). In especially high demand are wind-energy developers, who do the front-end work, including finding plots of land for wind farms, collaborating with meteorologists on wind assessments, and working with land owners and local regulatory agencies and power companies, according to Chris Beck, president of Global Recruiters of Boulder in Colorado, which specializes in recruiting for renewable energy and sustainable industries.

"We see developers who may have engineering, law, construction backgrounds. It really is a fusion of a lot of different disciplines," Beck says. They can earn salaries between $110,000-$180,000, he notes, and often have large bonuses based on successful projects, which can easily add 50 percent or more to their salaries.

Wind Construction Project Manager
After a developer lays the groundwork for a wind farm, the construction manager "takes over and gets the thing built," Beck explains. These positions manage the daily activities of constructing wind farms, such as road work, foundations, collection systems, substation, interconnection, and commissioning, according to AWEA.

"They usually have an engineering background, and oftentimes they have experience building other energy-generating systems, like a fossil fuel plant," according to Beck. Their salary range is between $110,000-$130,000, he says.

Sustainability Director
Sustainability directors devise ways for companies to be more environmentally sensitive through such methods as reducing a company's "carbon footprint." The footprint measures the amount of greenhouse gases produced by burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating, etc., according to CarbonFootprint.com.

Directors' broad range of responsibilities fall into two categories, says Richard Eidlin, the Colorado-based business outreach director at the Apollo Alliance, which promotes clean energy and a reduction in dependence on foreign oil. There's an internal side of the job that looks holistically at how a company operates and creates ways to boost the bottom line through energy efficiency. On the external side, the director interacts with suppliers, regulators and products designers, as well as customers, investors, and advocacy groups.

Eidlin says the jobs are fairly high-paid, earning $100,000 and up, and usually require a background in science or engineering, depending on the company. "People interested in science, society, and policy would find this position of interest, because you have to keep track of all three to do well," he explains.

Energy Engineer
Energy engineers help companies reduce their energy costs, often focusing on making buildings more energy efficient. These positions are in high demand, according to Beck, as more companies strive for energy efficiency. Mechanical engineers are good candidates for these jobs; they simply need to learn about energy efficiency tools and techniques, Beck explains. He says their salary range is between $65,000 and $120,000.

If you're looking for a full-time energy engineering gig, your best bet may be at a larger firm with a bigger budget, according to Eidlin.

Environmental Engineer
Using biology and chemistry principles to develop solutions to environmental problems is the work of environmental engineers, who seek to limit the effects of acid rain, global warming, car emissions, and ozone depletion. "Assignments include the development of long-range community, regional, or facility plans to serve the public and protect the environment," according to Alexandra Levit's new book, "How'd You Score That Gig?: A Guide to the Coolest Jobs-and How to Get Them." "Environmental engineers are the ones behind the scenes, working every day to keep our planet from deteriorating more than it already has."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says environmental engineers should see employment growth of 25 percent between 2006 and 2016, much faster than the average for all occupations. PayScale salary data shows the annual median salary for environmental engineers with five to nine years of experience at $61,142.

Career Lessons You Can Learn From Reality TV

On the new reality TV show "America's Toughest Jobs," people with everyday careers leave behind the safe confines of their traditional workplaces to tackle some truly challenging assignments. The contestants, including an administrative assistant, an investment banker, and a sales representative, among others, bravely take on some of the most dangerous, demanding, and dirty jobs imaginable.

The likely lesson viewers will take away from this series: "Maybe my job isn't so bad after all." But this isn't the only pearl of career wisdom you can gain by tuning into reality TV. Here are a few more:

Start off on the Right Foot

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression. This adage rings true in both the reality TV and business worlds. In the opening episode of "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette," for instance, contestants vie for a "first impression rose" based on their appearance and a few moments of introductory chitchat. Those with lackluster debuts are the first to go.

While you won't receive flowers from interviewers for demonstrating poise and professionalism, it is still critical to win over hiring managers early. In a Robert Half International survey, executives said it takes them just 10 minutes to form an opinion of a job seeker.

Strengthen Your Time-Management Skills

The power suits for men and women may no longer set the style standard in today's "business casual" workplace, but how you dress for the office still matters.

"People who dress better are typically treated better at work," says David McKnight, a New York City-based image consultant. "They are usually given more responsibility and are shown much more respect."

Here are tips on what to wear -- and what not -- so you can make the best impression on your boss, your colleagues, and your clients.

The Big No-No's

Business casual isn't a fashion free-for-all, says Susan Bixler, president and founder of the Bixler Consulting Group.

The Atlanta-based consultant has created guidelines for business-casual dress for those just starting out, workers at mid-career, and those eyeing the executive suite.

The "baseline" look starts with three no-no's -- no flip-flops, no jeans, and no visible tattoos -- and calls for tailored trousers and long-sleeve shirts or tops for men and women.

The "mid-stream" look is similar but with an emphasis on higher-quality fabrics. The executive version ups the sartorial ante by recommending jackets for men and trouser-style suits for women.

"Any time you want to add authority, put on the jacket," says Bixler, the author of seven books, including "The New Professional Image: From Business Casual to the Ultimate Power Look."

All Suited Up

If you're unsure about the dress code -- or lack thereof -- for a prospective employer, you can ask in advance. But McKnight believes you really can't go wrong by donning a jacket or wearing a suit.

"A suit is a nonverbal way of communicating to the employer that you really want the position and that you are taking the interview extremely seriously," he says.

Style Challenges

Women, advises Bixler, should avoid too much of a good thing, whether it's clothes that are too tight, or too much make up, jewelry, or fragrance.

Men often make the mistake of showing up in casual clothing more appropriate for poker night with the guys than the office, or showing up at work unshaven or with dirty, unpolished shoes.

"There's an expectation [for both sexes] to look professional," Bixler says. "Women have more opportunity to make mistakes because there are more options for women. For men, it's more straightforward."

Too Much Skin

Edgy looks, especially those involving the baring of cleavage, skin or tattoos, rarely cut it at the office, unless you happen to work in a trend-conscious field like advertising or fashion.

"When you're not sure whether something is appropriate for work, then there's a 98 percent chance that it's not," McKnight says.

The Whole Look

Choosing the right clothing is just one component of your professional look, which includes good grooming and hygiene, as well as being well-rested and mentally ready to face the day.

"There are so many things we don't have control over, but what we can control is the image of professionalism we show to the world," Bixler says.

6 Ways to Get Over a Bad Boss

Many of us have had to escape from a bad boss situation. But like any bad breakup, the departure has residual effects that can last for weeks, months, and sometimes even years after you last laid eyes on each other. If your boss' critiques linger in your mind, it can leave you questioning your abilities, possibly even your worth as an employee, which is no way to start a new job.

Here are six ways to get over a bad-boss breakup.

1. Take the high road.
"You have to close your eyes and breathe and try not to say anything negative about that bad boss," coaches Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert and owner of The Protocol School of Texas, a company that specializes in corporate etiquette training. "That doesn't mean you can't vent to friends or a counselor, but it's much more dignified to keep quiet even though you may loathe the ground they walk on."

2. Work hard to stay positive.
"No one has the right to make you crazy," says Sue Thompson, bad-boss survivor, founder of Set Free Life Seminars, and author of a forthcoming book on bad bosses. "You must guard your heart and your mind and surround yourself with positive things." While enduring her bad boss, Thompson started every day listening to motivational CDs.

Jenny, a fellow bad-boss survivor, took a similar approach. "I had to force myself to work through these feelings, sometimes with therapy, and identify the positives that came out of this experience," she says. "I decided if I continued to feel bad, it was just another way for her to win, so it was up to me to turn this around."

3. Take ownership of the situation.
Accepting responsibility for the situation can help speed the recovery process, notes Ben Dattner, a workplace psychologist, coach, and professor at New York University. He illustrates this point with a study that examined how people dealt with the dissolution of romantic relationships.

"The more you blame the other partner, the better you're doing in the beginning because you're enraged, you're energized, as opposed to sitting there thinking about all the things you should or shouldn't have done. Then you're depressed and ruminating," he says. "But that's the short-term benefit with a long-term cost, because it makes you much less likely to meet someone. If you don't learn from the experience, you might repeat the experience."

4. Take notes for next time.
Getting fired doesn't carry such a stigma if you look at it differently. "It's a character builder," says Gottsman. "Say to that boss, 'Tell me how I could have made this different. Tell me what you think I could benefit from.' You may not want to hear it, but we don't learn a lot when things come easy to us. It's through our failures that we learn the most."

5. Analyze yourself.
If, over the course of your career, you continually are butting heads with a bad boss, it may be time to point your finger in the other direction. "Take a more balanced view and think, 'What is it about me that makes me particularly sensitive to this issue?'" suggests Dattner. "'Do all of her insubordinates see her as intolerable or is it just me?'"

6. View it as an opportunity.
Though you should give yourself time to grieve the loss of the relationship, no matter how bad or abusive it may have been, always know that the right boss is out there waiting for you. "Dealing with a bad boss can be the best thing that ever happened to you," says Gottsman. "Maybe it's a wake-up call to try something completely new."

8 Steps for Staying Stress-Free in an Tough Economy

It seems we've become a bad news nation as of late, with one headline after the next forecasting economic gloom and doom. Looming layoffs, pricey holidays, and even the coming election may have you on edge and stressed out. But stress is bad for your health and it's also bad for business.

Fear not, though. "The good news is that stress can be managed. Kept in its rightful place, stress will keep you motivated without overwhelming you -- or overshadowing your capabilities," says Liz Bywater, Ph.D., a behavioral change agent. Use her eight tips to manage your stress so you can manage to do (and keep) your job.

1. Breathe. It sounds simple, but Bywater reminds readers, "As our bodies respond to stress, our breathing tends to become rapid and shallow. By deliberately slowing your breathing and taking deep, calming breaths, you will help your mind and body relax and refocus."

2. Eat right. If you're eating on the go, without putting thought into what you're consuming, odds are that it isn't good for you. She states, "A diet of processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats -- typical of vending machine and fast food dining -- leaves you depleted of energy and unable to give your all." Put time into planning to eat healthful meals and stay hydrated. Adds Bywater, "You'll more than make up any lost time through improved productivity and increased focus."

3. Exercise. It's impossible to find the time to exercise -- you have to make the time. Bywater believes that a key to committing to regular exercise is to "find what you like and do it." With regular exercise, she says, "You'll feel calmer, more in control, and better able to take on the every day pressures and demands of work. I recently started boxing on my daughter's Wii system. It's a great cardio workout and a fun way to release the day's tensions!"

4. Sleep. In times of stress, the worst thing you can do is skimp on sleep. Bywater recommends six to eight hours of undisrupted sleep a night to make sure you've got enough fuel to perform under pressure. She suggests, "Establish regular nighttime routines, stay away from caffeine, put away the laptop, and listen to music or read a good book before going to sleep each night."

5. Keep your eye on the big picture. It's easy to get bogged down in day-to-day minutiae ? but remember to think big. Advises Bywater, "Don't waste precious time on low impact, non-essential tasks. Instead, dedicate your time and attention to those activities that move you in the direction of reaching your vision and achieving your goals."

6. Share the load. Even Superman and Wonder Woman got an assist from some of their Superfriends from time to time. She insists, "No matter how talented or experienced you may be, you simply cannot do it all." Instead of striving to be a solo act, says Bywater, "Delegate where appropriate. Collaborate. Divvy the workload. Share responsibility for the final product." If you follow her cues, everyone shares in the glory.

7. Strive for success -- not perfection. The best way to set yourself up for failure is to pursue perfection. Perfectionists are not only procrastinators -- they usually fail to appreciate their successes. To avoid this trap, Bywater recommends, "Do your job well, really well, and your achievements will be recognized and rewarded."

8. Celebrate your wins. A professional psychologist, Bywater points out, "It's not unusual for high performers to continually raise the bar for themselves, but it's vital to balance this striving for excellence with a healthy celebration of successes." She suggests taking time out to acknowledge your accomplishments. "Celebrating success is a wonderful antidote to stress," she adds.

Insist on the Best for Your Career

I remember looking for a job just before I finished graduate school. I poured over lists of companies that were located where I wanted to live, and I dreamed a lot about what it might be like to work in different industries.

I was reminded of when several my friends graduated with MBA degrees the preceding year and the goals they had.

One handsome, tall fellow wanted to become a vice president of an airline. I asked him why, and he told me that you could become a vice president of an airline at an earlier age than in other industries. Smiling, he also mentioned that as a single man he liked that there more unmarried young women working for airlines than could be met in most other industries.

A married couple had more modest ambitions: to get jobs in the same city that would provide opportunities for challenging careers. If the city was a nice place to live, that was an extra benefit. When both gained jobs in Seattle, Washington, they were thrilled.

Another man had spent a lot of time as a sailor on a nuclear submarine before graduate school: Any job that didn't involve working underwater was welcome to him.

All of that career planning sounds pretty reasonable, doesn't it? Little did I know that we were aiming very low.

A recent MBA graduate helped me see that much higher goals can be set. It was quite an eye opener. Let me tell you his story.

Ramesh Venkatraman was born in a beautiful village in a part of southern India that is well known for entrepreneurship in exporting products around the world. Accompanying his father on professional trips expanded his geographic horizons at a young age. His early schooling, college, and graduate studies were undertaken in a semi-urban setting renowned for its textile exports. Having absorbed so many influences, you might think that he entered a career that connected back to those origins, but that was not the case.

After completing a master's degree in science, Mr. Venkatraman was preparing to join a Ph.D. program; however, he joined the Indian space program instead, expanding his perspective on what can be accomplished. You are probably expecting to read that Mr. Venkatraman then became an astronaut . . . but that's not what happened.

Instead, his focus turned earthward and outward: He entered the information technology (IT) industry and began work in the United States, gaining important skills in IT at firms like KPMG, FedEx, Compaq, BvOI, and ABN AMRO Bank. Supremely talented, his quickly rose through the ranks from project manager to program manager to vice president.

In the corporate world, he came across many talented individuals who caused him to raise the bar on his dreams and aspirations, directly and indirectly tapping into his hidden talents.

One fine day, he learned that a highly respected colleague was an MBA and a Ph.D. student at Rushmore University. The colleague shared that he would soon be moving into a strategic management function from a technology management position, and the colleague became head of strategy and planning for a leading financial institution.

Encouraged by that example and wanting to build on his IT success, Mr. Venkatraman decided to earn an MBA degree. He hoped his studies would add the skills and knowledge he would need to become a generous entrepreneur, one who would share any wealth gained with employees and other stakeholders.

He also selected Rushmore, primarily because he would have more freedom there to tailor his studies and courses to meet his personal objectives. The freedom he gained provided lots of motivation to learn, and Mr. Venkatraman graduated a little more than a year later.

Asked just before his graduation what his goals for using his MBA degree were, he reported that he now wanted to found a billion-dollar business in a short amount of time. Wow! What a contrast that goal was with what my friends and I had thought about at the same stage in our business training.

Curious about the shift, I asked Mr. Venkatraman to tell me more about how he decided on this new direction. He responded that the course work at Rushmore made him realize that greater things were possible than he had considered before. Wanting to help others, he also began to appreciate that the more successful he was as an entrepreneur, the more people he could help as a philanthropist, a role he hadn't thought about playing before.

He now feels confident that he can accomplish that aggressive goal and is working hard to achieve it. He is also considering earning a Ph.D. from Rushmore.

Naturally, few people accomplish the full scale of what they hope to achieve. Often, they accomplish quite a bit less.

Even if Mr. Venkatraman falls far short of his new goals, he will probably accomplish more than he would have by merely fulfilling his pre-MBA goals. By learning the power of thinking carefully about what he wants to accomplish, his education served him better than mine did.

While this can be seen as a boost to telecommuting, nothing brings out the scammers like a crisis. There's a new twist in work at home schemes, fear of the workplace. Work at home scams have been the top rated fraud for the past two years and I imagine it will be a long time before they are knocked out of first place. Specifically, the bulk of the scams reported included envelope stuffing kits, craft making kits and medical billing software. Currently all Internet transactions are still considered "at your own risk" so getting your money back is one tough matter. You do have resources, though none can guarantee you will receive your money back.

Here's what you need to do if you suspect that you have been scammed. Document everything! Information such as the name of the company, physical and mailing address, the names of the people you spoke with or wrote to. The method you used to pay, ie: credit card, money order, check and the amount of the money you paid. You'll need copies (keep the originals) of any supporting documentation you have such as, e-mails, letters the company's phone number and website URLS. How you received the merchandise and a copy of the original envelope it was sent in is also helpful when you are filing a complaint.

You'll also need a description of the services or goods that was offered and the date of first contact with the company. You'll need to describe the goods and services you actually received and copies of all correspondence with the company if you have contacted them after shipment or requested a refund.

It has been predicted that the baby boomer generation will be the most effected by the changes health care system with regard to nursing care. The current health care system is in a state of flux. With insurance companies constantly raising rates and premiums, and the hospital stays becoming less frequent, the end result is that health care must extend to the home. The impact of this new era of home care will have various effects on the population that is served. Although it is true that home care has been in existence for almost as many years as the profession of nursing itself, the amount of clients that home care now serves is quite a bit larger than the past as well as more medically demanding. What this situation implies for the nursing profession is a larger responsibility in ensuring that clients who are discharged within one to two days receive the necessary teaching and follow up nursing care to ensure progressive healing and a maximum return to wellness.

In order to help ensure the goal for the client after discharge, the hospital nurse must be acutely aware of what the clients teaching needs will be from the time of admission.

For instance, those clients that have chronic respiratory disorders will need to be taught how to assess themselves for the danger signs and symptoms of circulatory overload. The patient needs to be taught that a weight gain more than one to two pounds per day may indicate circulatory overload and lead to respiratory distress. While this teaching plan may seem simplistic, the fact remains that many of these respiratory compromised clients are released from the hospital prior to their blood work and medical condition stabilizing.

The problems arise when the client is not functioning at a cognitive level to utilize the teaching from the nurse. Even more crucial is the need for family to be involved and their desire and willingness to participate in home care. When all falls through, which happens more frequently than not, the client is the one who suffers the consequences. As it happens, family cannot always coordinate with the nurse's schedule, follow through teaching may not be completed by the nurse on that particular shift. Sometimes by no ones fault, the system fails the patient just from lack of time. The solutions to this dilemma cannot be elucidated in one or two sentences. As the old saying goes, "it takes a village to raise a child", "similarly it takes a village to promote the wellness of an individual". With this said, one can infer the difficulties in promoting the physical and emotional wellness of a client recently discharged from the hospital.

To at least begin to offer some solution's, would be to hire more nurses. Since this is not logical in keeping with the hospitals policy to save monies, there has to be other possible solutions. One solution would entail a network that extends from the hospital to the home. The homecare nurse begins working with the patient and nurse before discharge. Facilitation of communication, along with the care of genuinely concerned individuals involved in the health care system will make a positive difference in the quality of the client's life.

This truth is evident in the various professional licensures that are available for nurses, such as Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Midwifes and Nurse Anesthetists. It therefore behooves each licensing board to not only self regulate judiciously but to also refine the scope of nurse practice from time to time.

The individual states must also act in accordance with the overall nursing theory in mind. One can interpret from the above Nurse Code that many of the hospitals employ a similar code to their organization for promotion of client health care needs. As the student nurse approaches graduation, thoughts of beginning a career in nursing come to mind. A new nurse should think very seriously about their career goals. These include long term as well as short term goals. As with any path of life that an individual takes, it is not random. The idea of graduating from a nursing program once again dictates to the graduate that plans once again must be laid for the road ahead. Nothing worthwhile doing is done haphazardly. All things require preparation. Even as one contemplated going into the nursing field, certain pre-requisites had to be completed before hand. Graduating from a nursing program is another transition phase that must be approached with the same dedication and planning as was first applied. The short synopsis below is a sample of a career goal paper. Everyone will have their own unique career goal paper. Now is a good time to start thinking about career goals.

INTRODUCTION:

The field of nursing attracted me for several reasons. The first reason being, that a nurse is the front line person in caring for others and saving lives. The nurse will in many cases such as in the hospital or homecare environment discover the patient who needs emergency attention before the physician. It will be up to the nurse to respond accordingly within the scope of their practice and hospital procedures. Why does this facet of nursing attract me? Nurses did not have that crucial level of responsibility initially. Because of this, many patients died. For instance, a nurse from the past may not have known the therapeutic values of electrolytes and blood gases thereby putting the patient's health in jeopardy. Now, in present times, the nurse must know all of the pertinent lab values and act upon any change immediately, either by calling the physician or implementing standing orders.

The other aspect of nursing that is also attractive to me in becoming a nurse, is that the nurse uses therapeutic communication and treats the patient's response to real or perceived illness. This is the corner stone of which nursing is based on. The holistic approach is so successful in helping patients to heal. I am a firm believer that for an individual to be able to heal from without, they must first heal from within. Therefore the nurse can help clients to adapt and grow in a positive way rather than negative. Since all of nursing is now based on evidenced practice, it is exciting to be able to put the scientific method to use. There are now logical and provable reasons that a nurse should take a particular course of action.

These are just some of the reasons which have attracted me to the profession of nursing.

SHORT-TERM CAREER GOALS:

My short-term career goals consist of successfully passing Nursing 255, then passing the national board exam. Once this is accomplished, I hope to be work on a medical-surgical floor and hone my skills as a graduate nurse. I have chosen medical-surgical nursing as a starting point because this particular field will help me to develop my clinical skills.

LONG-TERM CAREER GOALS:

I hope to be an active member in the profession of nursing, joining the American Nurses Association, attending seminars and lobbying for the advancement of nurses to prescribe medication independently. Hopefully within the next five years or so I will have a degree as an advanced practice nurse in the field of family healthcare and be working in an emergency room.

PERSONAL GOALS

My personal goals are humble. Money has never been a goal, rather doing that which enriches the soul. I am thankful to my Lord that I have been given the opportunity to have made it thus far. I take care of my mother and help my family as best I can. I am happiest when I am helping others, and owe a large debt of gratitude to my instructors, who have given of themselves their wealth of knowledge and experience to help produce competent nurses.
